Many believe that Salt Cay is one of the best kept secrets in the Turks and Caicos Islands. This two square mile large island can be reached from Grand Turk and is named after its success in the salt industry. You can still find many old windmills, desolated Salinas, transportation carts and donkeys, all remembering of a rich history. You can visit the ruins at Taylor's Hill (the highest point on the island), walking towards one of the many bird watching spots or relax at its white beaches and tropical ocean. With less than 100 inhabitants, most visitors stay in charming bed and breakfasts in the main village Balfour Town.

Whale watching tours between January and early April are popular and you are guaranteed to see tens of North Atlantic humpback whales. The underwater world in the waters near Salt Cay is as secluded as the island itself. Most dive sites can be found on the west side of Salt Cay less than ten minutes away. Snorkelers will favor the area near Pleasant Point in the northwest where you will be surrounded with stingrays and hundreds of coral reef fish. South of Salt Cay, on the Turks Bank, you can find the remote cays Tucker Rock and Sand Cay. Some of the best diving is found at the spectacular historic wreck of the British HMS Endymion and the beautiful hard and soft coral gardens at Kelly's Folly. Moreover, new dive sites are explored and discovered every day, so who knows you might find the next wreck of one of the Turks and Caicos profitable pirates.
