South Caicos, the Rock or Big South, is a 10 square mile large island located in the southeast of Caicos. It used to be a thriving community in the Turks and Caicos Islands which made fame as one of the best places in the world for its fish, conch and lobsters. Game fishing competitions, sea food restaurants and fishing plants are plentiful and even today; the export market for fish is huge. East Harbor or Cockburn Harbor is the main village located in between the edges of the Caicos Bank and the inner lake Salinas. You can visit the remaining old salt works, the Coast Guard Station, several historic colonial houses with walls and gates, an iguana farm on Long Cay and the School For Field Studies, a world leading college for marine life and reef ecology.
Besides fishing, it is also a popular destination for diving, snorkeling and for its white beaches and abundant birdlife such as huge flocks of flamingos. Sail Rock Hills is an easy track that brings you all around South Caicos with panoramic views of Belle Sound, Horse Cay and the Turks Island Passage. Most diving is done on the outskirts of the Caicos Banks right in the Admiral Cockburn Land and Sea National Park. Here, just south of Long Cay, the ocean drops down into depth exceeding 6000 feet. You will find dolphins, mantas, migrating whales and many different species of coral reef fish. Schools of more than 100 eagle rays can be spotted in summer while many of the dive sites are sheltered enough to provide for excellent and relaxed coral reef diving.
