French Cay is a small uninhabited caye located to the south of Provo and east of West Caicos. It is most often dived by those on liveaboard trips often including visits to West Caicos, West Sand Spit and even Ambergris Cay. There are also a few dive operators that dive here as a one-day trip but expect a long one hour boat ride before getting here. Since the island doesn't offer much shelter it is advised to dive here only in good weather. This three hundred feet long cay was home of notorious pirates in the 17th and 18th century. Nowadays, French Cay Sanctuary serves as a perfect hideaway for birds with many nests and breeding areas in summer.
This beautiful, quiet and remote sandy cay is located on the outer skirts of the Caicos Bank offering wicked drop-offs falling down into the abyss. The wall, facing southwards, starts at 40 feet and is covered in soft and hard corals creating excellent shallow diving for novice divers and snorkelers. January to March is the best time if you are interested in humpback whale sightings, while July to September is the best time to see mating nurse sharks. You will also find plenty of fish species such as foureye butterflyfish, snapper, fairy basslet and parrotfish, but also beautiful stands of elkhorn coral.
